Ta Moko is a specialist practice belonging to the ancestors and caretakers of Maori cultural knowledge. For a long period Ta Moko was endangered; outlawed in 1907 and tentatively revived in the 1980s. Today Ta Moko is enjoying an artistic resurgence amongst Maori.
